San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood has been the recent target of a series of hate crimes, which included multiple individuals being struck by gel-style pellets as they walked along University Avenue, the San Diego Police Department reported. In a search for the culprits, SDPD investigators from the Criminal Intelligence Unit made headway by utilizing the department’s Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system to analyze surveillance video footage that led to a vehicle linked to the crimes.
The ALPR system’s identification of the suspect vehicle was a crucial step in the investigation, collecting video evidence and pulling threads together that brought detectives to the doorstep of the alleged harassers, going further than just glimpses caught on digital eyes, and today, coordinated raids at three separate locations have resulted in the arrest of three 19-year-olds: Anthony Lopez-Quiniones, Arturo Herrera-Sustaita, and Angelo Nathaniel Aron, for their part in this hate-motivated pellet-pelting spree.
These arrests, it’s important to note, follow SDPD’s pronounced efforts to provide a safe environment free from such bias-driven attacks within its community, a sentiment echoed by the department’s statement, where hate crimes have been clearly labeled as intolerable acts: “The San Diego Police Department is committed to ensuring a safe space for all members of our community and acts of hate such as these will not be tolerated,” according to the
San Diego Police Department official release
.
The case, now a matter for the courts, heads to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, while those with information related to the hate crimes are being urged to come forward and contact SDPD at (619) 531-2000 or to reach out to Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 the arrests marking a poignant reminder that law enforcement is not blind to the undercurrents of bigotry that attempt, from time to time, to mar the diverse tapestry of San Diego’s communities.
