Suspect Arrested in Connection with Bellevue LGBTQ+ Pride Art Vandalism Spree

The Bellevue Police Department has successfully apprehended a 21-year-old suspect linked to a series of vandalism acts targeting the City’s LGBTQ+ Pride art installation. Officers took Ivan Barzul into custody from his Renton residence, following an investigation into incidents that took place over the summer.

According to the

Bellevue Beat Blog

, Barzul faces three counts each of Malicious Mischief in the First Degree and Reckless Driving for the disturbances that occurred on July 14, September 7, and September 15. The arrest, made at approximately 1:58 p.m. on November 12, was a direct result of tips from the community via Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound’s anonymous tipline, which provided crucial information to the detectives.

Bellevue Police have valued the damages from those incidents between $3,200 and $5,337, inflicted when the suspect performed reckless burnouts over the Pride art piece, situated near Downtown Park. The traffic camera footage captured the silver/gray BMW sedan—missing its license plate—performing 720-degree burnouts, compromising the integrity of the artwork and endangering nearby pedestrians.

In a testament to public collaboration,

Bellevue Police Chief Wendell Shirley said

, “Officers often preach ‘see something, say something.’ It’s without a doubt Bellevue residents helped law enforcement hold this individual accountable.” These words echo the sentiment that the arrest represents more than just a conclusion to a series of vandalism acts; it’s indicative of the strong bond between law enforcement and Bellevue’s residents.

The investigation into the incidents was propelled forward as authorities sought assistance from the public in October. The police called upon witnesses and anyone with knowledge of the acts to step forward, offering a potential award for information leading to an arrest through the Crime Stoppers program. Now, with a suspect in custody, Bellevue’s ordeal with these acts of defacement against a symbol of its community’s Pride may have reached a turning point.
