With the start of the West Concourse expansion project, travelers at Hobby Airport will soon see major improvements. According to KHOU, Southwest Airlines and Houston Airports have teamed up to upgrade the baggage system, add more gates, and increase amenities. Officials from the airline and the airport made the news yesterday. The goal of the expansion, according to Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports, is to enhance the whole traveler experience rather than merely add additional gates.
Another feature that will soon be incorporated into the environment is an overhead canopy that connects the parking garage to the terminal. Southwest Airlines’ vice president of Airport Affairs, Steve Sisneros, told KHOU, “We have been operating continuously at Hobby Airport since our first year of operation in 1971. As a base for our flight crews and a gateway city to our worldwide service, it is a crucial market for us. Additionally, the combined efforts are intended to decrease passenger wait times and increase travel efficiency.
In August 2023, the Houston City Council unanimously approved funding for the project, approving $470 million for the expansion. According to the Houston Chronicle, this approval process involved first allocating monies for planning and design, then additional funding for construction. To complete the project, an extra $200 million is anticipated to be sought.
With passenger volume expected to exceed about 1.3 million in the first half of 2023, Hobby Airport clearly needs to expand. Officials have stated that the extension will maintain the airport’s contemporary layout, which includes natural light and a “Houston Friendly” feel, according to the Houston Chronicle. In an effort to enhance passengers’ overall travel experiences, the project will also increase the amount of space available for dining, shopping, and artistic endeavors.
The expansion’s renderings, which provide an overview of the planned upgrades at Hobby Airport, have been made public. By the summer of 2027, the project should be finished, fitting in with the schedule and scope of the airport’s planned improvements.
