When a stabbing at a nearby C-Mart developed into a homicide investigation, a typical day in Austin took a sad turn in the late afternoon. According to an official statement posted on the City of Austin website, the Austin Police Department said that they were called to a disturbance at the C-Mart at 7811 South 1st Street and found a Hispanic male who had a fatal chest wound.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been made public, was taken to a local hospital and declared dead at 5:08 p.m. despite medical efforts to treat his injuries. According to reports, the victim and the suspect, Luis Marroquin, 32, were coworkers who worked as day laborers. According to the same allegation, the two had met at Home Depot earlier that day.

According to the inquiry, which is based on witness statements, Marroquin attacked the victim without cause while they were both in the parking lot. To gather evidence and question witnesses, homicide investigators and crime scene experts were dispatched to the area. This is the 60th homicide in the city this year.

Officers found Marroquin in the area shortly after the event and took him into custody. According to the official Austin Police Department announcement, he has subsequently been taken into custody, charged with first-degree murder, and is being held at the Travis County jail. Through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program, community members can come forward anonymously if they have any information that could help with the continuing investigation.

The Austin Police Department is inviting anybody with information to call them at 512-974-TIPS, or to provide anonymous tips by calling 512-472-8477 or visiting austincrimestoppers.org, as they continue to put together the circumstances leading up to this sad tragedy.
