The New Bedford Police Department recently captured a 14-year-old boy carrying a loaded firearm. Detectives found and detained the young person this past Tuesday after he was wanted for his role in a previous gunshot incident, the department said in a social media post.
The arrest’s circumstances include a gunshot that happened in an apartment on Studley Street in early September; fortunately, no one was hurt, but it raised major worries about gun ownership and juvenile violence. One bullet was fired into the floor. When the teenager was arrested, police discovered that he was carrying a Glock 17 that was loaded with thirteen shots and had an extended magazine that could store up to thirty-four rounds. Chief Paul Oliveira stated, “It’s disturbing that such a dangerous weapon was found in the hands of such a young offender,” according to the New Bedford Police Department.
Detectives from the Major Crimes Division and state troopers from the VFAS unit, a team dedicated to tracking violently inclined persons, worked together to make the arrest and seize the firearm. The New Bedford Police Chief acknowledged the need for intervention outside of the realm of law enforcement and expressed hope that this arrest could mark a significant shift in the young suspect’s trajectory. Anyone with more information on the incident is being urged by the department to come forward anonymously through their website or police tip line.
