Former Detroit Lions Star Antwione Williams Charged in Capitol Riot Onslaught

Antwione Williams, a former player for the Detroit Lions, is facing charges for allegedly taking part in the violence that rocked the country during the January 6th Capitol riots. The 31-year-old is charged with multiple offenses, including assault, obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disturbance, and resisting and hindering certain police, according to CBS News. Misdemeanors connected to his behavior and presence on Capitol’s restricted property further exacerbate these charges.

After being detained in Savannah, Georgia, Williams—a former fifth-round choice in the 2016 NFL draft by the Lions—became the first person accused in the wake of the Capitol attack since Donald Trump’s presidential victory in 2024. According to WXYZ, the former NFL player participated in the first breach of the restricted zone and assaulted officers, attempting to take down bike racks that were being deployed as temporary barricades.

Williams was identified by comparing images from riot footage with social media posts and an official NFL headshot, according to a criminal complaint that delves deeper into the events of that day. The complaint claims that Williams was shown on camera lunging toward an officer. According to CBS News, Williams “lunged at an officer and swatted at the officer’s hand.” Credit card records that verified a purchase made on January 6th near the Capitol further connected Williams to the scene of the crime.
