Oregon Invests $5 Million in Rural Youth Emergency Housing Assistance Program

The Youth Emergency Housing Assistance Program (YEHA) has been given $5 million by Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS) to help young people and their families who are homeless or about to lose their housing in several rural areas. The goal of this funding is to help young people who are homeless in these places. OHCS Executive Director Andrea Bell emphasized the agency’s dedication to safety and stability for youth by saying, “We are committed to ensuring every young person in Oregon has a safe place to call home,” as quoted by official sources.

The goal of the YEHA program is to help the places where there are a lot of homeless people. The project team has found the best ways to spend the $5 million by using information from Oregon’s Emergency Homelessness Response and the Department of Education. The goal is to help right away and also help fill in the gaps in services and funds that rural areas often have.

Five groups from Coos, Klamath, Lincoln, Douglas, and Josephine Counties have been chosen to receive cash as part of the project. People who work for these groups include the Coos County Office of Homeless Response, the Lincoln County Housing Authority, the Phoenix School of Roseburg in Douglas County, and the Maslow Project in Josephine County. Each has dealt with homelessness among young people before and has the local knowledge and tools to handle the cash well.

The founder and executive director of the Maslow Project, Mary Ferrell, was hopeful that the program could make a real difference in the lives of the kids it serves. “This funding will empower us to expand our outreach, enhance our support services, and build sustainable solutions for the unique challenges faced by our Josephine County community,” she said, in the state’s release. The YEHA program does more than just provide housing; it also helps with important things like rent, utilities, school, and getting around.

Together with the local schools, these groups want to make a better support system for families that helps with both keeping a home and doing well in school. With an eye on the big picture, YEHA tries to meet people’s current housing needs while also making the future more stable. Through these efforts, OHCS is working to help young people finish school and make a smoother transition to life.
