Weekend Freeway Closures and Detours on Loop 202 as ADOT Advances Expansion Project

As the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) begins roadwork that will result in numerous closures along Loop 202 (Santan Freeway), drivers in Gilbert should get ready to modify their schedules. Drivers are encouraged to factor in additional time for travel because of this weekend’s Loop 101 to Val Vista Drive widening project, according to the town’s official website.

On Saturday, November 16, from midnight to noon, eastbound traffic on Loop 202 between McQueen and Cooper roads will be affected by significant restrictions. At the same time, the Cooper to McQueen roads westbound high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane will be closed. ADOT advises drivers to think about using alternate routes, like Pecos or Germann roads, in order to potentially prevent delays.

Additionally, from midnight to noon on Sunday, November 17, the westbound portion of Loop 202 between Cooper and McQueen roads will be closed in a similar manner. Along with the westbound on-ramps at Lindsay Road, Frontage Road, and Val Vista Drive, the eastbound HOV lane in the same section will also close. To get around the construction, ADOT recommends the same detour choices as the closures from the day before.

Additionally, commencing Tuesday, November 12 and lasting Friday, November 15, there will be overnight closures at northbound Arizona Avenue at Loop 202 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. During these periods, it will be illegal to make any left turns at the intersection of Arizona Avenue and Loop 202. Additionally, from 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, to 5 a.m. on Friday, November 15, southbound Arizona Avenue will be closed at Loop 202. For individuals who must access Arizona Avenue north or south of the closure, detours include using Germann or Pecos roads to get to McQueen or Alma School roads.

Arizona Avenue will be limited to one lane in each way at Loop 202 for a number of months following these initial closures. For everyone’s safety, drivers are reminded that the speed limit in work zones has been lowered to 55 mph. When approaching and passing through the impacted areas, drivers are advised to slow down, remain vigilant, and be ready to merge.
