Following a 2020 incident in which he was driving under the influence and killed Commerce City police detective Curt Holland and a lady named Francesca Dominguez, 49-year-old Fructuoso Rosales-Cano was found guilty Thursday of vehicular murder, according to The Denver Post. Rosales-Cano had been convicted of DUI twice before, in 1997 and 2006, and was determined to have a blood alcohol concentration of.294, which is more than three times the Colorado legal limit.
According to The Denver Gazette, Rosales-Cano’s careless driving in his Ford F-350 on Colorado 2 near Turnberry Parkway resulted in him swerving into oncoming traffic after trying to pass slower vehicles and then overcorrecting. This tragic decision not only claimed innocent lives but also crushed many others in its wake. The search of his car turned up small liquor bottles and empty beer cans.
“The damage caused by this defendant is truly unfathomable,” said District Attorney Brian Mason in remarks that were recorded by multiple news sites, expressing the tragedy’s seriousness. Two innocent people have died and countless lives have been destroyed as a result of one man’s unjustifiable decision to drink and drive,” and “Francesca Dominguez did not deserve to be separated from her loved ones.” According to the Denver7, Detective Curt Holland should still be alive today, serving the city he loved alongside his wife and two kids.
The families of the victims and a community still dealing with the expensive consequences of one person’s disrespect for the law and the sanctity of life are waiting for Rosales-Cano to be sentenced on January 9, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. in Division L of the Adams County District Court. Denver7 provided the information regarding his sentencing date.
