Caltrain Celebrates Ridership Boom Following Electrification, Bay Area Commutes Turn Cleaner and Faster

The electrification of Caltrain has resulted in a notable increase in ridership, with the number of commuters reaching its greatest level since the epidemic. Over 753,000 passengers used the trains last month, a startling 54% increase over October 2023 estimates, according to data supplied by Caltrain. Weekday averages reached nearly 27,000 commuters, up 38% from the previous year, suggesting that the appeal of a faster and cleaner commute is appealing to Bay Area residents, according to Caltrain.

More people are walking about outside of the daily rush. There have been so many athletic events and activities over the weekends that any transit authority would be jealous. Saturdays have seen a 169% increase, and Sundays have seen a 142% increase since October of last year. Compared to the days when diesel-powered locomotives were common, these numbers mark a significant improvement. Since the service switched to all-electric operation in August through October, overall ridership has increased by 17%, with weekends seeing a 38% rise.

According to Caltrain, Executive Director Michelle Bouchard summarizes this milestone as follows: “We set out to deliver a state-of-the-art modern rail system for the people we serve,” she stated when the Electrification Project began construction in 2017. Witnessing the widespread adoption of our new service by our riders is incredibly satisfying.
