According to NBC Los Angeles, two people have been arrested in connection with a string of break-ins that targeted storage facilities around Southern California. The two, identified as 31-year-olds Kassandra Arteaga and Eric Navarrete, are accused of stealing from storage facilities in the counties of San Bernardino, Riverside, and Los Angeles. They were found in possession of a wide range of valuables, including medical supplies and memorabilia, some of which are valued at over $100,000.
According to CBS News Los Angeles, the Rialto Police Department issued search warrants at the defendants’ Fontana apartment and a storage facility in San Bernardino after receiving a tip and security photos from the locations. This marked a turning point in the case. Power tools, athletic gear, and a Batman and Batmobile toy that the suspects frequently sold online were among the stolen goods. Sgt. David Padilla observed that one man attached himself to his belongings as he got out of his car, triumphantly taking back a dollhouse he had bought for his daughter for Christmas.
Over $64,000 worth of stuff has been returned by Rialto Police thus far, indicating that efforts to reunite owners with their possessions have been partially successful. To provide reassurance against the anonymity of loss that so frequently looms over the aftermath of theft, law enforcement has called the burglary victims to identify and retrieve their belongings. Xiang Yan, a victim of dental supply theft, told NBC Los Angeles that he was not anticipating the recovery of his belongings, saying, “I didn’t know they can find my stuff back because it’s it’s a like high value.”
In an Instagram post, the Rialto Police Department praised Detective Herrera’s excellent investigation work as well as the community. For help in a dance between civic responsibility and the law that is being played out on the ledger of community trust, anybody who may have been impacted by the burglaries is asked to get in touch with Detective Herrera personally.
