In a case that highlights the vulnerabilities of the elderly, especially those with disabilities, a home health care nurse in Polk County has been arrested on accusations of stealing over $140,000 from a blind 77-year-old man she was employed to assist, as reported byWFLA. Carrie Hutchinson, 46, faces charges including exploitation of the elderly and grand theft, for allegedly using her access to the man’s finances to fund personal expenses such as cruises, pop-on veneers, and flights for friends.
Hutchinson’s employment began as a nurse for the man’s wife in January 2020, and after his wife’s death, she took on the role of personal assistant, managing the man’s accounts for shopping and bill payments, according to details shared byWTSP. The victim’s suspicions arose in July 2024, prompting him to have a retired chief financial officer friend review his account, uncovering transactions for $780 for “pop on veneers”, and for airline tickets amounting to $1,588 among others which did raise red flags leading to an investigation that uncovered a four-year theft operation totaling $141,594.
Law enforcement statements obtained byWTSPdetail further expenditures including ATM withdrawals, photography classes, and payments on Hutchinson’s own credit cards. Hutchinson, who had seen her salary increment from $5,800 to $6,000 a month in 2024, advised the victim post-firing that she had “borrowed” the funds with the intent to repay them, a promise made void by the cessation of her employment.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd expressed deep disappointment at the betrayal, stating onFOX 13 News”This woman’s actions are despicable,” highlighting the severe abuse of trust, the sheriff added, “Taking advantage of an elderly man who entrusted her with his life savings while also paying her a good salary is inexcusable and unforgivable,” articulating the gravity of the charges Hutchinson now faces.
