White Marsh Mall to Reinstate Accessible Parking Near Food Court After Civil Rights Complaint

White Marsh Mall is set to reintroduce accessible parking spaces near its food court entrance, and a change following a civil rights complaint alleging the displacement of disability parking for electric vehicle chargers. In a finding stemming from a 2019 complaint, the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights (MCCR) identified probable cause, prompting the mall to revert to its previous parking arrangement, which was more accommodating to customers with disabilities.

According to aCBS News Baltimorereport, the accessibility issue came to light after a visitor with disabilities noted that the closest reserved spot was over 100 feet from the mall’s food court. The MCCR was involved in the resolution, which now involves reinstating the necessary parking spaces closer to the entrance to serve better individuals who battle with mobility.

“When I pulled up and noticed that the spot was closer to the door, it made me happy,” shopper Malika Muhammed stated, as perCBS News Baltimore. “I was glad because it was a complaint at one time. I thought it was unfair for people that’s disabled.” The process, however, is not an overnight fix. Cleveland Horton II, Executive Director of MCCR, explained to the same outlet that it involved not a simple paint job but careful planning and assessment by engineers due to the “significant slope issue” that could be hazardous for those with mobility challenges.

Reaffirming the commitment to inclusivity, Horton mentioned in a statement cited byWMAR-2 Newsthat “Accessibility is not just a compliance issue; it is a reflection of our commitment to equity and inclusion.” The work, expected to be completed by April 2025, represents not just a resolution of a complaint but a step towards understanding and respecting the needs of all Marylanders. White Marsh Mall did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
