Man Fatally Stabbed on Upper West Side While Defending Neighbor’s Family from Home Invasion

On the Upper West Side yesterday morning, 46-year-old Alfred Soto was fatally stabbed while trying to protect his neighbor’s teen daughter during a home invasion. According to a report byabc7 New York, Soto was called to help a 19-year-old girl and her special needs brother when four to five men entered their 6th-floor apartment, intending to steal several dogs. Soto, who lived on the 11th floor of the same building, was stabbed in the stomach and chest while confronting the suspects.

Soto’s cousin, John Somwar, recounted toabc7 New Yorkthat Soto immediately responded to the mother’s distress call without hesitation, stating, “He just dropped his phone, and I’ll be right back and left. It was a friend that was in need and didn’t feel safe that her daughter and she called him and knew he’s the type of person that would step up and meet a challenge head-on.” After the conflict, the suspects fled in a U-Haul truck without license plates. When police arrived, they found Soto bleeding heavily. He was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

NBC New Yorkadds that Soto, affectionately known as “Lobo,” was a long-term resident of the building and cherished by those in the neighborhood. Soto’s friend, identified by his last name, Ramirez, said, “He went to diffuse a problem. Things escalated and they stabbed him.” Law enforcement officials interviewed residents and reviewed surveillance footage to understand what led to the fatal encounter and to identify the suspects.
