Grand Rapids’ culinary scene is making room for a familiar name with a new identity as La Huasteca reopens today as Iker s Tacos. After a seven-month hiatus prompted by the termination of their lease on Plainfield Avenue, the family-owned Mexican establishment is welcoming patrons back, and although having been gone those months, they’ve retained their community’s support.
Salvador Oliveros, the owner, has memorialized his late son through the renaming of the restaurant. In a statement obtained byFOX 17, he said, “Our son passed away last year on September 11. So now we thought, ‘Well, new location and everything.’ That’s a nice way to always remember our son.”
The new establishment at 1634 Coit Avenue NE encountered zoning challenges, being located in a residentially zoned district. With the assistance of the Creston Neighborhood Association, these were overcome, allowing the restaurant to begin service which includes a limited menu for the grand opening.
A social media post byIker’s Tacosradiated gratitude towards the community for their support, saying, “You guys are amazing, you made this possible. Thank you to our amazing friend Jenna Arcidiacono and our friends at Creston Neighborhood Association for all the support. Words cannot describe how grateful and happy we are. You guys are the best, thank you so much and God Bless You.” The restaurant emphasized that the reopening and the successful move had been galvanized by the unrelenting support of the customers transformed into family over eight years.
Diners can expect business as usual with the restaurant’s normal operating hours being from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and extended hours on the weekend, as reported byWZZM 13.
