In a recent update provided by the authorities, an investigation has been launched into a fatal shooting that shook the Central 9th neighborhood, leading to a SWAT intervention. According to a news release fromSalt Lake City Police Department, the incident unfolded late Friday night, leaving a 21-year-old man dead at the scene.

The emergency call, placed just before midnight last Friday, reported the shooting near 800 South Park Street. Arriving officers discovered the young man, critically injured by gunfire, who subsequently died despite the immediate life-saving efforts. With the 53-year-old man going back inside his apartment after the shooting, which the officers believed, they soon faced a barricaded situation.

SLCPD’s preliminary findings suggest the two men were outside when the altercation escalated into gunfire. However, the specific circumstances or motive of the events that led to the violence have yet to be made public. Stalled communication efforts with the older man prompted the involvement of SWAT and crisis negotiators, all working to resolve the standoff peacefully.

Homicide detectives are now tasked with piecing together the chain of events at the crime scene, coordinating with the medical examiner’s office to formally identify the deceased and determine the exact causes of death. SLCPD actively seeks information on this case and encourages anyone with relevant photos or video evidence to contact them at 801-799-3000 or anonymously via the City Protect App, referencing case number 24-270954.
