An Oregon man, Matthew Leland Klein, was handed a sentence of 90 days in prison last Thursday followed by 36 months of supervised release after his plea of guilty on felony and misdemeanor charges arising from his involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach. As reported by theU.S. Department of Justice, Klein’s conviction comes as part of the sweeping law enforcement response to the Capitol riot, which has seen over 1,561 individuals charged since the fateful day.
According to theU.S. Department of Justice, Klein, aged 27 from Pendleton, Oregon, traveled from Portland to Washington, D.C., with his brother, Jonathanpeter Allen Klein, to participate in the “Stop the Steal” rally. Post-rally, the siblings advanced toward the Capitol and breached the restricted perimeter. Found separated eventually, Matthew Klein was seen climbing up the Capitol’s scaffolding and entering the building carrying a Gadsden flag. Despite leaving the building within minutes, Klein remained on Capitol Grounds and later, with his brother, forced open the North door, confronting and obstructing law enforcement in the fray.
The FBI’s investigation led to the arrest of the Klein brothers on March 23, 2021, in Oregon, fueled by collective efforts of the FBI’s Portland and Washington Field Offices, the U.S. Capitol Police, and the Metropolitan Police Department. Matthew Klein was identified as BOLO (BE on the Lookout) #127R and was charged with civil disorder, a felony, and entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, a misdemeanor.
His sentencing at the hands of U.S. District Judge Randolph D. Moss comes after a guilty plea entered on July 17. The damage caused to the Capitol building and the perilous exposure of police officers to the mob during the brothers’ aggressive actions have been a point of significant concern and mention in the court documents, with damages estimated to be more than $10,000. Jonathanpeter Allen Klein awaits his sentencing scheduled for December 2.
