Houston Braces for Twin Cold Fronts with Thunderstorms and Possible Record Lows

Houston residents can expect a week of weather transitions as two cold fronts are slated to hit the region, bringing with them a mix of conditions ranging from thunderstorms to possible historic low temperatures. As reported by theHouston Chronicle, the first cold front is expected to reduce temperatures slightly, while the second front, arriving midweek, is forecasted to plunge the mercury significantly more.

Starting Sunday, Houston is experiencing cloudy skies and muggy temperatures in the low to mid-70s, with a high around 80 degrees. These temperatures are part of a system that has been bringing record highs this fall, averaging 89.7 degrees since September 1. Showers are expected before 4 p.m., possibly turning into thunderstorms, which could bring heavy rainfall at times.

As detailed by theNational Weather Service, on Monday, southwest winds could gust up to 25 mph as the first cold front moves in. This will lower temperatures from the 80s to the 60s after sunset.

Houston could see up to two inches of rain on Sunday, with total rainfall reaching between three-quarters to one inch through Monday, with higher amounts possible in some areas. This marks a change from recent dry conditions. However, residents can expect a dry, sunny reprieve starting Tuesday.

The second cold front, arriving by Wednesday morning, will bring cooler temperatures in the 50s, with highs reaching the upper 60s. By Thursday, temperatures could dip into the mid-40s, possibly even lower in northern areas. As the sun rises, temperatures will climb back to near 70 degrees. This front will bring cool winds and mark the beginning of chillier days, but not as cold as a northern winter.
