A traffic stop in Tampa on Saturday night ended in a fatal shooting. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputy Jared Mincemeyer shot and killed a driver who reportedly showed a gun. The incident took place around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of West Hillsborough Avenue and Elliot Drive. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, as reported byWFLA.
The deputy stopped the vehicle for an obscured tag, and upon approaching the vehicle, Mincemeyer, who has been with the force since October 2022 and has no prior use of force incidents, asked to see the driver’s hands. Mincemeyer fired, striking the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister addressed a recent incident, stating, “Our deputy was simply doing his job trying to protect our community when he was forced to defend himself against an armed individual.” He emphasized that deputies are required to act in self-defense and to protect the public when faced with a deadly threat. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that body camera footage of the incident will be released, along with the identity of the deceased once next of kin are notified.
