San Antonio has a new City Auditor, with Mayor Ron Nirenberg announcing the appointment of Baltazar Buddy Vargas to the position. Vargas, who has served the City Auditor s Office for 17 years, will succeed Kevin Barthold, following Barthold’s retirement. According tothe city’s announcement, Vargas was chosen from a pool of highly qualified candidates thanks to his extensive experience and professional credentials.
As stated on thecity s website, Mayor Nirenberg praised Vargas. “Buddy Vargas has shown unwavering dedication and exceptional skill over his 17 years with the City,” he noted, expressing his confidence in Vargas’ ability to excel in his new role. A City Auditor Search Committee, which included Councilmembers Phyllis Viagran, John Courage, and Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia, was put together by Nirenberg in April 2024 to spearhead the selection process.
Endorsing the new appointment, City Manager Erik Walsh highlighted Vargas’s experience and the value it brings to the city’s commitment to transparency. “Buddy brings a deep understanding of the city s operations and our commitment to transparency,” Walsh said, affirming his confidence in Vargas’s leadership qualities and his potential to uphold the rigorous, impartial oversight expected by the community, as reported on thecity s website.
The new City Auditor s background is robust, with Vargas having held numerous significant roles in his nearly two-decade tenure with the City of San Antonio, including positions as Senior Auditor Staff and Audit Manager. His qualifications extend to certifications as a CPA, CIA, and CFE, coupled with an MBA and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Vargas is set to officially step into his new role on December 1, 2024, after an oath of office at the City Council meeting scheduled this coming Thursday.
