Erica Lee Carter officially joined the U.S. House of Representatives with a community-focused swearing-in ceremony at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church-Youth Church. As reported byKHOU, the event held personal and political significance, as Carter will represent the 18th District, a seat previously held by her late mother, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, for nearly 30 years.
The district, which spans through the Houston metro area and includes Downtown Houston, has a strong Democratic lean. Lee Carter takes over an area where political legacies and family ties are deeply valued. She honored this legacy by endorsing former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to succeed her for a full term.
The ceremonial transition, following the special election after Sheila Jackson Lee’s death in July, marks Erica Lee Carter’s entry into the House. “I want to finish for my mom!” Carter said in a statement inFOX 26. The ceremony, including her first address to the House, symbolizes the passing of the torch, with video footage available for the public.
Carter will serve as interim representative until January 3, 2025, when Sylvester Turner is expected to take over.
