A recent break-in at Mt. Bonnell in Austin has left one woman without precious mementos of her deceased father. On an outing with her boyfriend and best friend, 29-year-old Cheyenne Magill discovered her car had been burglarized, and among the stolen items were two pendants containing her father’s ashes. In a statement obtained byFOX 7 Austin, Magill recounted the disturbing discovery. “We got here at like. 5:20 ish came back down at six and somebody had busted out my back window, got in and stole my bag, which had my wallet, all my ID cards,”she said.
The theft of the pendants was a devastating blow for Magill, who lost her father, Guy Magill, to cancer a decade ago. “I lost ten, ten years ago to cancer,”Magill told Yahoo News. The sense of loss was compounded by the theft of handwritten notes from her grandmother about her father, making the incident more than just a simple burglary, as those items possessed deep personal significance and were utterly irreplaceable. She expressed her disregard for the other stolen items, emphasizing, “I just want my dad’s ashes back so bad.”
The crime captured on a nearby Tesla’s video suggests a break-in by experienced thieves, and Magill believes that this incident may be related to other similar break-ins in the area. Social media investigations by Magill point to a pattern of car burglaries in the Mt. Bonnell parking area, where other evidence of smashed glass supports her theory.
Magill is now pleading with the community for assistance, hoping that sharing her story might lead to the return of her father’s ashes. Moreover, she is calling for increased security measures in the area. “Maybe put more patrols out here, have them come through more often? Cameras,” Magill suggested toFOX 7 Austin. She further recommends that APD should erect warning signs to alert others to the potential for thefts.
The Austin Police Department has yet to respond to queries regarding the incident and any steps that may be taken to address security concerns at Mt. Bonnell. Magill’s appeal remains an open plea, as she urgently seeks the return of something far more valuable than material possessions.
