Earlier today in Mattapan, a routine traffic stop escalated into a significant weapons and drug seizure. At 12:29 AM, Boston Police Department officers assigned to District B-3 initiated a stop at Blue Hill Ave. & Mattapan St. which led to the arrest of Jeffrey Salvant, 38, on multiple charges. According to theBoston Police Department, Salvant, a Mattapan resident, faces a variety of firearm and drug-related offenses.
Officers were patrolling near American Legion Hwy. and Blue Hill Ave. when they observed Salvant’s vehicle speeding and, after a pursuit of approximately half a mile, successfully initiated the stop. Upon approach, they found Salvant with his hands raised and detected signs he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The vehicle contained open alcoholic containers, and two female passengers were also present. Salvant’s behavior, alongside these observations, prompted a pat-frisk under suspicion of concealed weapons or contraband.
The search of Salvant and his vehicle proved officers’ suspicions founded. A switchblade was found on Salvant’s person, and within his jacket, two loaded handguns were discovered. The subsequent search of the vehicle’s passenger compartment revealed a black range bag hiding an AR-style rifle. This firearm, deemed a “privately made firearm,” lacked a stock and bore no serial numbers, making it difficult to trace. It was equipped with 30 rounds of ammunition, though none in the chamber. In addition to the weapons, officers confiscated a bag of suspected cocaine from Salvant’s possession, as per theBoston Police Department.
Salvant was subsequently arrested and is set to be arraigned at Dorchester District Court. The charges include three counts of carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity feeding device, unlawful possession of ammunition, and a prior firearm violation linked to violent and/or drug crimes, along with possession of a Class B substance (cocaine). In addition, traffic-related infringements such as operating a vehicle under the influence and traveling at a speed greater than reasonable were cited. Despite the gravity of the situation, the quick response of Boston officers ensured the incident was resolved without injury or further incident.
