Four Injured as Single-Engine Plane Crashes at Pomona Fairplex During NHRA Drag Racing Finals

A single-engine plane crash at the Pomona Fairplex on Sunday has left four people injured. The incident occurred near the drag strip at the Fairplex grounds during the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Drag Racing Finals,NBC Los Angeles reports. The Los Angeles County Fire Department indicated that the plane, identified as a Piper PA-32, made its descent shortly after 11 a.m., striking several parked vehicles before coming to rest.

Witnesses captured footage of the plane flying dangerously low over the event space before its calamitous impact. “That was shocking to me to see a plane just cut a whole truck right in half, from the roof to the door,” Tristan Szalonek toldABC7. According toFOX LA, the plane was on final landing en route to Brackett Airport when it crashed, with the pilot and three passengers subsequently hospitalized two were reported to have critical injuries, while the others sustained moderate injuries.

All injured parties were aboard the single-engine aircraft, as confirmed by officials, with thankfully no injuries reported on the ground. Jonathan Torres of the LA County Fire Department said, “All four souls aboard the plane were the ones transported so no injuries to people on the ground,” in a statement obtained byNBC Los Angeles. The response from emergency personnel was swift, aided by the proximity to the crash site because of their onsite presence for the race event.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified, and an investigation into the crash’s cause is currently underway, as mentioned by the Pomona Police Department which also added, “We are investigating an apparent small plane crash near the dragstrip in Pomona,” in a statement quoted byCBS News Los Angeles. Firefighters were also deployed to contain a spill of aviation fuel to prevent fire hazards.
