A woman died last week after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross I-95 near Philadelphia International Airport, resulting in significant traffic delays and the closure of the highway. According toFOX 29, Pennsylvania State Police found the woman with grave injuries and “no signs of life” on the interstate last Friday evening.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. when the pedestrian tried to cross the highway from the right to the left side. In an update given by state troopers, as per6ABC, she was hit by a black Chevrolet van in the far-left lane and was thrown into the middle lane. After being projected into the middle lane, a white Chevrolet Express van drove directly over her but did not seem to make contact, according to police statements.
The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene, reportedNBC Philadelphia. Her identity and the reasons she was on the highway remain unknown. Both van drivers stayed at the scene, with the crash shutting down I-95 southbound from exit 14 for a few hours, before it was reopened around 6 p.m. on the same day.
Witnesses shared the personal impact of the event as the investigation unfolded. “Everyone was stopped. We were waving at each other, talking to each other through the windows. We’re all like, ‘What’s going on?'” Jordin Sellen stated, a local resident. Justin Crow, who was caught in the traffic due to the highway closure, missed his flight home to Texas. “It was a nightmare. We got stuck in the traffic. Added about an hour and a half to our drive,” said Crow, who managed to reschedule his flight, in a statement obtained by6ABC.
