Seventeen dogs were seized from a pickup truck in Walker, Michigan, a distressing scene caught on the state’s west side by body camera footage. According toLocal 4, the dogs were discovered in a truck containing feces and without any water, subsequent to a report from an individual concerning several dogs in a truck parked outside a restaurant in mid-October.
The owner, identified as Carolyn Newsome, has been charged with a felony for failing to provide adequate care for ten or more animals, a charge that could result in up to four years in prison. As reported byWOODTV, officers remarked on the lack of space and the absence of water bowls, with one deputy questioning Newsome about her understanding of the dogs’ needs. She responded, acknowledging the necessity for constant access to water and food.
The shelter the dogs were taken to has not provided specific details about their condition, quoting the ongoing investigation. This was further corroborated by information fromWZZM13, which obtained body camera footage from the Kent County Sheriff’s Department showing officers removing the dogs and interacting with Newsome, who was arrested in October.
Court documents revealed that the dogs were malnourished and covered in feces. An Animal Control Officer noted in the court documents that “upon arrival at the shelter, the dogs quickly drank an abundance of water and ate an abundance of food, further showing that they were hungry and dehydrated,” asWZZM13reported. Despite the evidence, Newsome continually denied the dogs’ poor living conditions. Newsome is currently scheduled for a preliminary examination in a Walker courtroom.
The shelter where the dogs were placed, the Kent County Animal Shelter, has stated that the dogs are receiving appropriate care but has yet to indicate when or if the animals would be put up for adoption, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Newsome s court date follows her formal charge and her alleged infraction brought to light after the concerned 911 call made by an anonymous onlooker.
