A man was sunbathing behind the Fourth Street lifeguard tower when a city employee driving a car on the beaches turned a calm Sunday on Miami Beach into a perilous one. According to the Miami New Times, Melissa Berthier, a city representative, confirmed that the 59-year-old man was released the same day after being brought to Ryder Trauma Center for treatment of his severe injuries.
The incident happened early in the afternoon, most likely as a beachgoer was lounging in the Florida sun, according to WSVN. Ocean Rescue employee Kevin Stockhausen has been cited for reckless driving that resulted in significant injuries, and the Miami Beach Police Department is looking into the incident. He’s on administrative duty right now.
The internal affairs of the MBPD are also being investigated. The personal injury firm Phillips-Hunt & Walker said that although this tragedy is alarming, it is not the first time that similar catastrophes have happened along Florida’s shoreline. According to reports, more than 20 sunbathers have been ran over in recent years, which is a concerning trend. Whether it’s the two 18-year-olds caught in the shadow of a patrol car this past Memorial Day at Daytona Beach, or the 23-year-old woman who was hit by an SUV from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in 2022 while she was lying on the sand.
