The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reports that Felix Lamar Turner, 56, passed away soon after being arrested on drug-related charges. According to Action News Jax, patrol officers stopped Turner during a traffic stop in the Springfield area on Monday afternoon. The 1900 block of North Main Street is where the incident took place.

According to First Coast News, Turner was taken into custody for using or possessing drug paraphernalia, possessing an open container of alcohol in the car, and possessing a prohibited substance. While sitting in the back of a patrol car at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Pre-Trial Detention Facility, he started experiencing “an apparent medical emergency.”

Initial medical attention was given by Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office staff, and additional assistance was requested from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. Turner was then taken to a nearby hospital, where, according to a news release from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, he was declared dead at around 6:50 p.m. According to First Coast News, the type of medical emergency that caused Turner’s death has not yet been made public.

Preliminary investigations revealed no evidence of an altercation or use of force before or during Turner’s arrest and transportation, according to the stories given by News4Jax. In addition to an independent investigation by the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the precise cause of death, the sheriff’s office has enlisted the help of its Cold Case and Crime Scene Units to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
