By securing a new long-term debris disposal location through a conditional agreement with a Nan, Inc. subsidiary, Maui County has made strides in its recovery from the Lahaina Wildfires. According to Maui Recovers, the deal, which requires approval from the Maui County Council, entails paying $4 million for 30 acres of active quarry space and 49 acres of post-quarry land adjacent to the already congested Central Maui Landfill.
Maui County’s plans to purchase 20 acres from Komar Maui Properties through eminent domain were shelved due to the pressing need for additional space. “The acquisition of these properties enables us to secure a final disposal site for the wildfire debris and also provides years of additional landfill capacity, strengthening our community’s resilience,” reported Mayor Richard Bissen in an Island News story. In addition to providing a location for wildfire debris, the land purchase will assist Maui in enhancing waste management and becoming ready for upcoming environmental issues.
According to DEM Director Shayne Agawa, the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is moving more quickly to establish the new disposal site. In addition to supporting advancements in recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy initiatives, he underlined that the site acquisition is essential to supplying decades of landfill capacity.
Owner Nan Chul Shin told Maui Recovers that the local construction company Nan, Inc., which was established in 1990, supported the agreement, saying, “We recognized the importance of this property for Maui’s recovery efforts.” With this arrangement, we are happy to help Lahaina rebuild and to support Maui’s future requirements, benefiting the community and the environment in the process. Additionally, we value our tenant’s participation and support in helping the County reach this goal.”
