Bay Area Hip-Hop Icon Saafir Passes Away at 54 Amid Health Struggles

The hip-hop community in the Bay Area laments the passing of 54-year-old rapper Saafir. Saafir is renowned for his unique poetic style, which is blended with jazz, and for having a career that both captivated and motivated audiences and other musicians. Saafir died this morning in his birthplace of Oakland, according to TMZ, which was announced on social media by his former groupmate Xzibit.

In recent years, Saafir, whose real name was Reggie Gibson, had bravely negotiated a slew of medical challenges, including spine cancer and post-operative difficulties from spinal surgery that required him to use a wheelchair. The family confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle that he passed away at 8:45 AM while surrounded by his friends and loved ones.

Saafir, who joined Xzibit and Ras Kass in the “Golden State Warriors” supergroup in the 1990s, was a pivotal member of the West Coast’s response to East Coast lyricism. “I can’t believe I’m writing this right now, but don’t know what else to do at the moment,” wrote close buddy Xzibit in a tribute to him on Instagram. We surrounded him and expressed our affection for him. Now he can relax,” Xzibit said.

In addition, the ‘Golden State’ rapper dabbled in acting, most famously as Caine’s cousin Harold in Menace II Society (1993). Beyond his professional endeavors, Saafir had a turbulent personal life that included a challenging background and a deep spiritual revelation while incarcerated. Xzibit called on the hip-hop community to help Saafir’s brother, Chop Black, and son, Lil Saafir, emphasizing their need for assistance at this difficult time.
