Norman Secures $700,000 Homeland Security Grant to Strengthen Cybersecurity Infrastructure

The Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity Grant Program has awarded the City of Norman a grant of about $700,000. Last Tuesday, the grant was authorized by the City Council. According to the City of Norman, the money will be utilized to enhance vital infrastructure and services in the city as well as fortify cybersecurity measures.

According to Kari Madden, who oversees the cybersecurity initiatives for the Information Technology Department, Norman has never before been awarded a grant of this kind. “We were really excited to hear news of being selected,” Madden stated. According to the City of Norman, the funding would enable the department to hire a cybersecurity technician and buy backup software in order to improve the city’s digital security.

Norman’s information technology department is in charge of protecting private information and making sure the city’s systems are dependable and secure. In an effort to bolster these safeguards, the agency is replacing antiquated data backup systems. Information technology director Tim Powers was optimistic about the cash’s effects, saying, “This funding will put us in an even better position to continue supporting public officials and community members in terms of providing topnotch cybersecurity and seamless digital services.” According to the City of Norman, the City also intends to employ a new cybersecurity technician to handle possible security risks and safeguard the privacy, availability, and integrity of its network and systems.
