Howard County Launches Planning for America’s 250th Anniversary with Focus on Inclusive Storytelling and Reflection

In an effort to mark a changing national milestone, Executive Calvin Ball of Howard County has issued an Executive Order establishing a workgroup to organize Howard County’s celebrations for the United States’ 250th anniversary in July 2026.

In a press statement issued by Howard County, Ball emphasized the commemorations’ wider relevance by saying, “This anniversary is not merely a commemoration of our past but a celebration of our present and a guide for our future.” The scheduled activities will showcase the numerous tales of adversity and success that shaped the American path. The workgroup, which includes county employees, civic leaders, and historians, reflects an inclusive approach.

The workgroup is under strict time pressure to submit a written report to the County Executive by November 1, 2025. “To ensure our success, we will establish committees, which will include events like the Fourth of July celebration, cultural performances, reenactments and education panels, commemorative projects like a time capsule, and community, student, and youth engagement,” Kim Pruim, the Chair of the U.S. 250th Anniversary Workgroup and a representative from the Department of Recreation and Parks, promised in a statement that was reported by the county’s announcement.

Students expressing the reframed patriotism for their age and the cultural champions of the Merriweather Arts and Cultural Center are just two examples of the diverse group of people from Howard County that make up the cadre leading the efforts.
