Broward County Welcomes Beam Furr as New Mayor and Mark Bogen as Vice Mayor in Annual Commission Reorganization

The Commission of Broward County has selected the county’s top leaders for the next year. Previously serving as vice mayor, Beam Furr was chosen to become the new mayor yesterday, while Commissioner Mark Bogen was picked to take over Furr’s responsibilities. As required by the county charter, the choices were made during the commission’s yearly reorganization.

Furr was chosen to represent the patchwork of various Broward towns from West Park to Dania Beach. Furr has twelve years of experience as a City of Hollywood Commissioner and was elected mayor in 2018. A news statement from the county stated that he was elected to serve District 6 in 2016. After serving as Broward Mayor in 2019 and representing District 2 since his election to the Commission in 2015, Bogen, a seasoned lawyer with an experience in public service, assumed the position of vice mayor.

As four incumbents retake their oaths of office, commissioners continue to forge their own paths in local governance. Alexandra P. Davis, the new representative for District 7, was likewise welcomed by the county. With roots in London and Jamaica, Davis is a world traveler by profession who brings a wealth of expertise from her work in several ministries and local government organizations. The “District 7 Swearing In and Acceptance Speech” described her international experience, which will undoubtedly influence her time in Broward politics.

As she returns to her position in District 1, outgoing Mayor Nan H. Rich considered the progress of the previous year. In her 2024 “State of the County Address,” Rich proudly declared that the “State of County is strong,” highlighting achievements in the area of affordable housing, a $20 million increase to the Housing Trust Fund, and the approval of more than $28 million in gap funding for housing projects. According to the same news release, Rich’s achievements reverberated across the government, establishing a standard for her successors.
