Marion Man Sentenced to 18 Months for Sexual Assault at Local Hobby Lobby Store

Maurice Williams, a 21-year-old Marion male, pleaded guilty to a fourth-degree felony charge of gross sexual imposition and was given an 18-month jail sentence. The conviction is related to an April 11 incident at a Marion Hobby Lobby where Williams sexually assaulted a 19-year-old female employee. This was reported by WBNS.

The conviction and imprisonment in this instance are meant to show the community’s extreme intolerance for such actions, said Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan. According to WBNS, Grogan said, “The prompt conviction and sentencing in this case demonstrate our office’s resolve to protect our citizens from criminal behavior.” Additionally, Williams had to register as a Tier I sex offender, which required him to do so every year for 15 years after his release from jail.

The crime at the McMahon Boulevard store was committed more than seven months prior to the sentencing.According to NBC4icoverage, Williams admitted his guilt when he appeared in court.

“Sex crimes like these not only harm individuals but also instill fear in our community,” Grogan said in a news release acquired by The Marion Star, underscoring the assault’s violation of the physical space as well as the wider effects of such acts on community well-being. The case against Williams was prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Chuck Hall.

The case has highlighted the role of the legal system in dealing with sexual assault and sparked worries about public safety. Thus, Williams’ conviction and punishment are a statement against the commission of sex crimes in the Marion community.
