Nearly three years after a horrific fire destroyed their former facility, the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando has ceremoniously begun building on their new shelter. The groundbreaking at the location was a major turning point in the organization’s recuperation process, according to the ClickOrlandoreport. The future shelter, which will be 25,000 square feet in size, is scheduled to open in 2026. It is situated next to the Orange County Jail on John Young Parkway, a key location that was selected long before the fire compelled quick changes to the designs.
The fire’s aftermath necessitated quick action to control animal care. For instance, we could take in roughly 7,000 animals annually before the fire. According to ClickOrlando, Pet Alliance CEO Stephen Bardy said, “Post-fire, it’s between 4-5,000,” highlighting the tragedy’s effect on their business operations.
According to WFTV, Florida’s largest shelter medical unit will be located at the new Edward H. Hensley Adoption Center and Kylie J. Capri Campus. With this major improvement, the shelter will be able to treat more animals and provide care for creatures with specific needs who could otherwise be put to death. Additionally, it is anticipated that the facility will have multiple roomy sections devoted to various animal requirements, intended to provide both a cozy setting for the animals and a warm reception area for potential adopters.
Another obstacle that the Pet Alliance has not yet completely surmounted is funding. Even though the organization is getting closer to its objective, the $18 million needed to finish and maintain the new shelter still lacks $4 million. Bardy reassured that all funding up to this point has come from private donations, highlighting the organization’s need on philanthropy and community support. Potential donors were encouraged by Pet Alliance to visit their capital campaign website to either make a donation or obtain additional information.
