Oklahoma Group Proposes Open Primary Amendment by 2026

An amendment to go from closed primaries to an open primary system has been presented by Oklahoma United. According to OKC FOX, voters would be able to decide on the proposal in November 2026 if the petition for State Question 835 is accepted.

Voters must select a party under the existing political system in order to take part in the primaries. Independents can vote in the Democratic primary in some areas, but they are usually not allowed to vote in the Republican primary. Tulsa World claims that this arrangement has caused political discord and left many voters feeling helpless or alienated. State Question 835 supporters, gathered at the Oklahoma History Center close to the Capitol, support a primary system in which all voters, irrespective of party affiliation, can cast ballots for the same slate of candidates.

According to State Question 835, Oklahoma would have an open primary system in which the top two candidates—regardless of their party affiliation—would compete in the general election. Proponents, such as Oklahoma United’s founder and CEO Margaret Kobos, contend that this strategy will encourage more inclusive and representative democratic involvement and provide a remedy for the state’s current political primary system. They argue that excessive partisanship is encouraged by the current system. Kobos pointed out, “We vote for the person we think is best for the job, in every race, no matter how we are registered.” Voters in Oklahoma will now have to decide whether to adopt the proposal, which has the potential to drastically alter the primary elections in the state. According to KOCO, the initiative, which is based on the idea that “This is an Oklahoma solution to an Oklahoma problem,” would be decided by the people.
