One Dead in Multi-Vehicle Crash on 405 Freeway Near Harbor Boulevard in Costa Mesa

The 405 Freeway in Costa Mesa was the site of a late-night collision involving many vehicles that resulted in one fatality. According to NBC Los Angeles, the crash happened Tuesday just before midnight close to Harbor Boulevard. Overnight traffic was severely disrupted by the closure of the southern portion of the road; lanes only started to resume on Wednesday morning.

The circumstances of the collision and the victim’s identification have not yet been made public by the California Highway Patrol. FOX LA quoted a City News Service story that documented the temporary closure of all southbound lanes, which was confirmed by the CHP. The typical flood of morning commuters had to slowly traverse the clogged roads because the freeway did not fully reopen until after 9 a.m., which made the traffic problems even worse.

At least seven automobiles were involved in the collision, which occurred at the core of the freeway near Harbor Boulevard, according to NBC Los Angeles. Authorities had to conduct a thorough investigation as a result of the debris and chaos in the aftermath, which prolonged the traffic stoppage.

A man in his 50s was the only one killed.Several cars were scattered across the closed interstate lanes as ABC7’s aerial coverage of the collision showed the chaotic scene.
