Light Winds and Mostly Dry Weekend Ahead for Honolulu, NWS Forecasts Calm Weather into Thanksgiving

The National Weather Service predicts light, variable breezes and largely dry weather for people in Honolulu anticipating the weekend. This is a change from today’s gradually waning trade winds. While there will still be some showers on the windward half of the Big Island, the rest of the island will have mostly sunny sky.

As Sunday approaches, conditions are stabilizing throughout the majority of the state as the trade winds have been lessening. The likelihood of rain is decreasing due to the weakening of the high pressure system that was once located roughly 300 miles north of our busy city. A weak front is predicted to provide minimal moisture and low winds for the majority of the week, even if it may pass across the islands late this weekend. According to the NWS, Thanksgiving is expected to be particularly calm.

According to aviation news, the windward Big Island is expected to see showery weather with MVFR conditions today, while the rest of the island should see good weather with a few clouds letting in some sun. But for the Big Island over 2,500 feet, a mountain obscuration warning is still in force and might last all day.

Through tomorrow, soft to moderate trades will be encouraged by surface high pressure on the marine front. Looking ahead, the calm sea state may change to a more variable one on Sunday when a weak front moves toward Kauai. A succession of swells from the northwest and north-northeast are predicted to arrive during the following few days, though they won’t be very strong. Although advisory-level surf is not expected to be reached by these swells, north and east-facing coastlines may experience greater surf. Close observation is necessary because these swells are predicted to peak between Saturday and Monday as they combine.

Last but not least, the dry period is more than just a talking point; KBDI readings remain high and humidity may drop close to critical levels until Sunday. Thankfully, the mild trade breezes we’ve been experiencing should allay most fire weather worries.
