U.S. Attorney’s Office in Florida Indicts 72 in Q4 Crackdown on Violent Crime and Illegal Firearms

In the fourth quarter of 2024, federal prosecutors in the Middle District of Florida have piled up 72 indictments, bringing the hammer down on illegal firearms and violent crime. The initiative is a component of the national Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) plan, which aims to stop violent crimes from spreading so far in the neighborhood. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the aggressive legal charges include a variety of federal guns, drug, and other violent felony violations.

Under the direction of Roger B. Handberg, the U.S. Attorney’s Office also carried this battle outside of the courtroom by conducting community outreach aimed at preventing violent crime. In the final quarter of the year, the office contacted and spoke with more than four hundred people, including students, to inform and educate them on preventing violent crimes, according to a news release. These programs, which are backed by prosecutors who collaborate closely with newly released people at engagement events, aim to provide a path toward reintegration and away from recidivism.

The PSN program uses a multidisciplinary approach and is regarded as a key component of the Department of Justice’s goal to reduce violent crime. It entails stakeholders from a range of industries cooperating to pinpoint urgent issues with violent crime and address them with all-encompassing, empirically supported solutions. By targeting the most violent criminals and building community partnerships, PSN aims to reduce crime rates through smart enforcement and re-entry programs.

Several of the 72 indictments that were made are noteworthy because they have a clear connection to the evil activities of firearm trafficking and felons in possession of firearms. According to data from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, over 100 weapons were seized as a result of the campaign. In one prominent case, Angel Velazquez Delgado and accomplices were charged with gun trafficking in Orlando, which had ramifications for Mexican drug gangs. These kinds of cases suggest that the arm of justice is still working to disarm criminal organizations and reclaim areas plagued by the threat of violence.
