Akron Man Dead in Homicide, Suspect Charged After Standoff with SWAT

A 32-year-old man was killed in an Akron gunshot early this morning; the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially determined that the incident was a homicide.According to FOX8, the Akron police were called to the incident at around 12:05 a.m., just after midnight, at the 100 block of E. Wilbeth Road.

The victim was inside a house with multiple gunshot wounds when the Akron officers arrived.According to Cleveland19, he was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m., but his identity has not yet been made public.As of right now, no one has been taken into custody in relation to the incident.

When Akron police followed the 28-year-old suspect, Byron Johnson, to a home on Silvercrest Avenue, the situation took a sharp turn.According to WKYCreport, “Based on preliminary information, officers determined that the victim was at the residence with the suspect and at least one other male.” Johnson allegedly shot the victim during the confrontation and then took off in the victim’s vehicle.

When Johnson allegedly committed aggravated burglary and attacked a 65-year-old woman at another place before being cornered by police, the situation became more serious. SWAT was summoned after he allegedly locked himself in a home on Storer Avenue. Following a brief confrontation, Johnson made an attempt to flee through a window. Nevertheless, as WKYC described, he was eventually caught and charged with murder in addition to a number of other crimes, such as aggravated burglary, felonious assault, and motor vehicle theft.
