New York Attorney General Probes Fatal NYPD Shooting in Queens, Civilian Dead and Officer Injured

An investigation has been opened by the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation into the Queens shooting death of a citizen by NYPD officers. The deceased was identified as Gary Dean Worthy, who was shot and killed by police on Tuesday and was declared dead at a nearby hospital. The incident happened after officers reacted to a 911 call regarding a robbery, the Attorney General’s Office said in a public statement.

During the gunfight, a cop was shot but not seriously hurt; he has since been discharged from the hospital. Meanwhile, investigators apparently discovered a handgun at the scene. According to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the OSI is responsible for investigating cases in which an officer may have caused someone’s death by any action or inaction, including situations in which the victim was armed or unarmed or in which the interaction took place while the officer was on or off duty.

The inquiry coincides with continuing hostilities and calls for greater police accountability. Determining whether the officers engaged in instances like the one that resulted in Mr. Worthy’s death may have committed any misconduct is the OSI’s mandate. What is now known is regarded as preliminary and may be changed in the future when more information becomes available.

The Attorney General’s Office highlights the thoroughness of the OSI’s investigations with this development. According to the attorney general’s office, “If OSI s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident.” As the OSI continues its fact-finding mission, the community, still in shock over the news, awaits more details. As of the time of this story, neither the NYPD nor the Worthy family had provided any official responses.
