One Dead, One Seriously Injured in Head-On Collision on Highway 101 in Coos County

Authorities in Coos County have reported a deadly crash on Highway 101 near milepost 255 on Tuesday that left one person dead and another critically injured. According to the initial Oregon State Police (OSP) report, the collision featured a head-on collision involving two cars, a southbound Ford F-250 towing a trailer and a northbound GMC Sierra.

For unknown circumstances, the 40-year-old Bandon resident Nickolos Hastings Barker, the driver of the GMC, reportedly veered into the other lane and struck the 49-year-old Bandon resident Michael Guarino’s Ford truck. Although the cause of the accident is still being investigated and authorities have not yet disclosed any additional information about what may have preceded the collision, Guarino was ejected from his car upon impact and was declared dead at the scene. Barker was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

The incident caused significant delays as the thorough on-site investigation progressed and efforts were made to clear the wreckage and ensure safe passage for other travelers. The OSP, Bandon Police Department, Bandon Fire Department, Coquille Police Department, Coos County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) worked the scene, closing the highway for approximately four hours.
