After a devastating fire two years ago that left the area without essential services and a void in the heart of Cambodia Town, Long Beach’s East Anaheim Plaza, once a bustling hub of business and community engagement, has been restored and reopened to the public. The city celebrated the plaza’s return on Saturday, Nov. 16, in a ceremony attended by residents, city officials, and the firefighters who initially responded to the 2022 blaze, according to the City of Long Beach.
“East Anaheim Plaza isn’t just a place to shop – it’s a community anchor that provides essential services, keeps residents connected, and supports the neighborhood in meaningful ways,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson, who emphasized the importance of the plaza’s reopening in a statement released by the City of Long Beach.
“By reopening this plaza, we are making sure our residents, including families and older adults, have the essential services they rely on close to home,” said Sixth District Councilwoman Suely Saro, reinforcing the local commitment to inclusive redevelopment. This highlights the city’s efforts to provide accessibility for all its citizens, according to the City of Long Beach.
“We knew our community was counting on us, so we did everything possible to be there for them,” said Jasmine Tran, owner of Spectrum Pharmacy, one of the plaza’s anchored businesses, who also thanked the local government and partners for their ongoing support. Echoing the combined efforts of all the plaza’s companies throughout the trying time, “We continued to show up every day to make sure no one went without care, from personally delivering medications to coordinating with nearby pharmacies.” Although the source of the fire is yet unknown, the City of Long Beach reports that the retail center’s firefighters were unharmed throughout the event.
