Juvenile Suspect Admits to Threatening Violence at Paw Paw and Mattawan Schools, Taken Into Custody

After reportedly threatening two schools in Van Buren County with violence, authorities have identified a juvenile suspect. Lockdown procedures were initiated in response to calls made yesterday at noon claiming that there would be violence at both Paw Paw and Mattawan schools.

According to WOODTV, the Mattawan Police Department and the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office made sure that the threats were addressed quickly and forcefully. The same person was identified as the origin of both threats. After being arrested, the suspect—who does not attend any of the targeted schools—admitted to making the threatening calls.

Authorities discovered that the dangers weren’t limited to Michigan. The same young person also threatened a Mississippi school in a similar manner, according to WOODTV, which sparked cooperation between Mississippi authorities and the Van Buren County Sheriff’s office.

In a news release that Van Buren County was able to receive, Daniel E. Abbott, the county sheriff, said that the investigation got underway as soon as the complaint was made. Deputies from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Deputies were among those who secured the schools. After being interviewed, the young suspect acknowledged making the threatening calls.

The Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office will assess the case after the inquiry is finished and choose whether to charge the minor suspect. Despite the upsetting nature of the event, the threats proved to be unfounded, therefore no harm came of them, and the lockdowns were eventually lifted.
