Houston Man, Gregory Elias Rodriguez, Charged with Murder After South Freeway Shooting

Authorities have arrested a man who has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on the 6000 block of South Freeway this past Monday. The Houston Police Department said in an update that the suspect, Gregory Elias Rodriguez, 55, is now charged with murder in addition to possession of a controlled narcotic and unauthorized firearm by a felon.

One individual was killed in the shooting, which happened at around 11:10 a.m., after being shot many times. His identity has not yet been verified by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. Witnesses reported that a male suspect was shooting at the victim as he was being chased across the median of the freeway’s HOV lanes. Rodriguez’s booking photo is made public, but neither his bond status nor his lawyer’s details are given.

Shortly after the incident, the call was answered by HPD Homicide Division Detectives W. Elliott and D. Hobson. When they arrived, they discovered the victim and called paramedics from the Houston Fire Department, who declared him dead on the spot. When officers tried to arrest a man who fit the suspect’s description, he ran away. A subsequent investigation linked him to the shooting, but he was first arrested and held on other charges.

After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Rodriguez was officially charged yesterday in the 208th State District Court.
