Oklahoma’s Turnpikes Fully Embrace Cashless Tolling, Aiming for Safer and Quicker Travel

The Will Rogers Turnpike completed the move to cashless tolling on Wednesday, joining the other 12 turnpikes in Oklahoma. It is therefore the last turnpike to implement the system. Since cashless tolling was implemented on other turnpikes, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority claims a decrease in accidents that occur in toll plazas, according to a report by KFOR.

For a more seamless travel experience, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation is recommending that passengers use PlatePay or PikePass. According to a report by KOCO, these options will make it easier for drivers to traverse toll stations, as over 80 million Americans are anticipated to travel over the Thanksgiving holiday.

All of Oklahoma’s turnpikes have been converted to cashless tolling. Early on Wednesday morning, the I-44/Will Rogers Turnpike became the final to implement the system. The goal of the change is to increase travel safety and efficiency. According to Joe Echelle, OTA Executive Director, “We re already seeing fewer toll plaza crashes on other turnpikes in our system since their conversion to cashless tolling and we re thrilled to provide this safety and convenience to motorists in Southeastern Oklahoma.” According to the KFOR, the modification is anticipated to shorten travel times and decrease traffic incidents for both vacation and commuter travelers.
