The University of Texas System Board of Regents has chosen to significantly expand their free tuition project, which is a huge step for Texas education. With this change, more pupils will be included in the System’s “Promise Plus” program. According to FOX 7 Austin, all tuition and fees for students enrolling full-time in UT’s undergraduate programs will be free for families making less than $100,000. The goal of this move, which will go into effect in the fall of 2025, is to drastically lower the cost of higher education for students.
This expansion has been made possible by a $35 million campus investment, which the UT System will use in part from the Available University Fund and endowment distributions. The system is working hard to guarantee equitable access to education for all students, regardless of their financial situation. “To be in a position to make sure our students can attend a UT institution without accruing more debt is very important to all of us,” said Kevin P. Eltife, chairman of the Board of Regents, in an interview with FOX 7 Austin. According to Chancellor James B. Milliken’s statement, which NBC DFW was able to receive, the plan is a “game changer” that will “improve access to colleges for all Texans.”
Students who enroll full-time and apply for state and federal aid from households with an adjusted gross income of less than $100,000 will be eligible for the program beginning in 2025. This kind of program reflects the University of Texas System’s overarching goal of ensuring that more Texans have access to higher education. According to NBC DFW, existing research suggests that this raised threshold could assist almost 60% of Texas households.
Targeting families with adjusted gross incomes of $65,000 or less, the “Promise Plus” initiative was first introduced in 2022. The goal of this most recent change is to increase the scope to include a larger group of people. With more than 256,000 students spread across 14 institutions, the University of Texas System is the largest university system in Texas. Notable schools in the system include UT Austin, UT Dallas, and UT Arlington. As stated on its website, “This is a next significant step in the regents’ ongoing commitment to guarantee that every qualified Texan who aims to earn a bachelor’s degree from a UT institution can do so, regardless of financial circumstances.” The UT System hopes to solidify its commitment to educational equity with the expansion of the “Promise Plus” program.
