According to the District Attorney’s office, a 42-year-old man named Eric Douglas Alexander recently appeared before a Multnomah County judge on a number of serious allegations, including attempted murder and arson. Alexander’s former intimate partner was the target of a series of harassment that led to the intentional burning of a residence, which is where the claims originated.
The case started in October after a concerning online exchange in which Alexander’s friend reported to police his threatening posts about an ex-partner who had relocated to Portland from another state. Alexander then pursued her and persisted in his intimidating behavior both online and in person. Residents of a Portland residence were startled awake on the evening of November 7 by a fire that was thought to have been started on purpose since Alexander later took credit for the incident in an email, boasting about it and menacingly implying that more violence would follow.
Alexander was confronted by Judge Steffan Alexander during his arraignment on Wednesday. The prosecution presented a plethora of charges against him, including four counts of attempted murder, arson, and recklessly endangering the life of another, in addition to harassment and stalking counts, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. Alexander pled not guilty to all of the charges, notwithstanding the seriousness of the offenses.
A spotlight is now on the work of the law enforcement officers who pieced together the sequence of events leading to Alexander’s arrest, as the legal process drags on and the victims and community await the next steps in a case that has rocked a neighborhood. Special recognition was given to PPB SVU Officer Huntley Miller and PPB Lieutenant Jason Andersen, whose efforts were crucial in bringing forth the charges. Since the indictment is only an accusation and the presumption of innocence is a fundamental tenet of the legal system unless proven false, the story is far from finished.
