Judge hauls Rudy Giuliani into court for allegedly repeating ‘exact same lies’ about defamed Georgia election workers that cost him $148 million

After two Georgia election workers he defamed asked that Rudy Giulianito be held in contempt of court for allegedly repeating the lies about the 2020 election that led to a $148 million judgment against the former New York City mayor, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., ordered Giulianito to appear in person for a hearing next month.

After Giuliani made many appeals for public donations last week, claiming he couldn’t afford to feed himself because of debt he owed to Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea ArShaye Shaye Moss, the motion for civil contempt was filed Wednesday morning.

Judge Beryl A. Howell of the U.S. District Court ruled on Wednesday that Giuliani must reply to the plaintiffs’ filing by December 2 and show up for an in-person hearing to discuss the case on December 12.

Freeman and Moss claim that even after they received the enormous judgment and Giuliani was compelled to file for bankruptcy, Giuliani’s campaign of defamation against them persisted. Giuliani ultimately agreed to a permanent injunction that forbade him from making any more allegations or statements suggesting that the plaintiffs had committed misconduct in relation to the 2020 presidential election in order to stop his actions and stop further legal proceedings.

However, plaintiffs’ lawyers claim that the former Manhattan U.S. Attorney has been flagrantly breaking that consent decree. The filing states (emphasis in original):

According to the motion, Giuliani’s most recent remarks regarding Moss and Freeman are nothing more than a reiteration of the same falsehoods that he has been spreading for years and that he has expressly promised not to repeat. According to the plaintiff’s lawyer, the evidence that he broke the court’s order is not only obvious and compelling, but also overwhelming.

Howell instructed Giuliani to respond by December 2 explaining why the motion for contempt should not be granted in light of the statements made by the defendant in two episodes of his livestream broadcast on November 12 and 14, 2024. Giuliani will also have to suggest a suitable penalty to force the defendant to abide by the injunction prohibiting them from further slandering Moss and Freeman.

According to Howell, Giuliani will be seen to have conceded the motion for contempt if he does not reply.

Giuliani’s extensive legal issues have gotten worse recently. Giuliani’s lawyers left without alerting Donald Trump after a federal judge in New York earlier this month dismissed his former personal lawyer for his absurd attempts to hold onto significant personal property that was owed to Freeman and Moss. In the bankruptcy enforcement case, he has since engaged a new lawyer.
