A convicted killer who claims to be the top Bloodsgang member in North Carolina is now charged with impregnating a jail staff member and a jail nurse.
Assistant District Attorney Mary Jude Darrow stated in court on Tuesday that Darrius King Blood Tyson, 32, exploited his power to arrange narcotics smuggling and obtain sex at the Durham County Detention Facility, according to local NBC affiliate WRAL. In the instance, two correctional employees were taken into custody. Their warrants state that the offense was committed on August 1st, although it’s unknown when they were pregnant and whether they gave birth to the children.
According to a press release from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, detention officer Jade Shanicia Lanique Robertson, 27, was arrested in September on a felony charge of sex activity by a person having care of a victim in a governmental institution. Her employment as a jail officer, most recently as a security squad sergeant, was promptly terminated. In October 2019, she was employed.
According to online court documents, L Erin Burnette, 41, a correctional nurse and contractor, was also taken into custody in connection with the crime.
Both women are expected to appear in court on December 3 and are now free on $25,000 unsecured bonds.
“This behavior is not indicative of the values of the men and women of this agency, nor is it consistent with the training, policies, and procedures of the Durham County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead stated in the news release.
Daniel Meier, Tyson’s lawyer, maintained that his client is a victim.
He told the judge on Tuesday that two employees who are now facing felony charges had sexually assaulted him, according to WRAL. Engaging in sexual relations with a detainee is a Class E crime. By law, a detainee cannot provide their consent. In certain situations, he is a victim.
Tyson faces trial in February on charges ofmurder, conspiracy, kidnapping and burglary in the disappearance and presumed death of Shawn Burton, a 44-year-old father of six. Burton waslast seen on March 22, 2022, and his body has not been found.
At least three people, including Tyson, are reportedly responsible for Burton’s injuries and restraint. According to awarrant obtained by News & Observer, Tyson unlawfully confined and restrained Burton, moving him from one place to another without his consent. Burton wasn t released by Tyson in a safe place and was seriously injured, the warrant states, with no further details.
Burton s wifespoke to WRALabout the mystery.
He left the house at night and said that he was going to the club to promote an event he had coming up, she said. That was the last time I saw him.
Tyson served more than 10 years for a 2010 murder during an attempted murder in Durham when he was 18. His conviction was overturned in 2020 after prosecutors withheld exculpatory evidence, court documents said.
Tyson was moved from the Durham County Detention Center to Central Prison in Raleigh, where he remains in custody.
